Discovering Your Growth DNA
Are you looking for a Third Growth Option ℠ ?
Growth requires understanding your personal and organizational DNA, which helps navigate the exciting yet uncertain journey of development.
- Growth DNA = the overlap of what you’re great at, what you love, and what drives economic results
- Hedgehog Concept (Jim Collins): three circles that reveal your true “sweet spot”
- Love - Can - Need Framework: passion + capabilities + market demand
Understanding and articulating your unique Growth DNA might be the key that unlocks your fullest potential. Share your thoughts and ideas about growth DNA in the comments section.
Always growing.

So what is your growth DNA Right? We want to grow as people, as companies. Growth is scary, difficult, exciting, uncertain, because it's future oriented, obviously. So I have learned that it really helps to be thoughtful, mindful, intentional about the growth DNA, both inside you as a human being and inside your company, as a team of humans, as a group of people and processes, so to speak.
Speaker 1:I think of a couple ways, a couple good ways to define DNA. There's, of course, jim Collins, in the book Good to Great, talks about the Hedge concept, which is sort of these three overlapping circles of a Venn diagram where you have what are you really good at, skilled at, what are your capacities pursuing, passionately, dedicating the company to? And, number three, what is the economic unit that sort of drives it? So it's that flywheel or three-circle-bend diagram I have taken through companies and teams, through what I call you know, very similar, by the way, to the hedgehog concept, what I call the love can need. Think about what you love, are passionate about what you can do and are really good at doing, and then what is there need for in the marketplace that you want to use to sort of drive the virtuous cycle. And then I think, personally you know, as human beings we want to be very aware of our DNA in terms of growth and like.
Speaker 1:For me, the convergence of skill and passion is my vocation, right, and my vocation is helping people, teams and companies to grow, to grow myself as a human being. So you know the skill part. I am good at seeing. You know connecting dots and seeing and developing also processes and taking those processes from beginning all the way through execution until it's done right. I am passionate about preparing for situations and then remaining curious so we can sort of weave and bob, as we, you know, go through the process and you know, so we can be flexible on the tactical stuff and and rigid on the strategic overall goals.
Speaker 1:So the idea of skill plus passion equals location is the way I think about my personal and professional DNA as it grows and expands through Sherpa, and I would just encourage you to think about how you would describe your DNA, because I think being able to describe it helps you live and grow and execute to your fullest possible potential. By the way, I am taking this video in Amsterdam this morning because I had a little break in the schedule and to me, travel is forever passion. So figure out what your passions are and be very mindful and intentional about living those to the fullest. I would love to hear some of your thoughts on what you know. You might disagree with some of the things I said. You might have other ideas. Put them in the comment section. Thanks,
